Bible Idioms in English

The Bible has influenced the English language in many ways. One of them is though the use of idioms or phrases. Below are some of the more common ones:

“A cross to bear” – Luke 14:27
“No rest for the wicked” – Isaiah 57:21
“A tree is known by its fruit” – Mathew7:15
“By the skin of your teeth” – Job, 19: 20
“The writing is on the wall” – Daniel 5
“Don’t cast your pearls before swine” – Matthew 7:6
“Turn the other cheek” – Matthew 5:39
“Forbidden fruit” – Genesis 2:17
“You reap what you sow” – Galatians5 10
“He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword” – Matthew 26:52
“Holier than thou” – Isaiah 65:512.
“Doubting Thomas” – John 20:24-27 13
“Eat, drink and be merry” -  Ecclesiastes 8: 15 14.
“The blind leading the blind – Matthew15:14 15
“Go the extra mile” – Mathew 5:41 16
“Out of the mouth of babes” – Matthew 21:16
